Why four prints, not one

A single family picture puts everyone in one frame. This does the opposite: every person keeps a print of their own moment, and the four hang side by side. Each galaxy is a different shape, at a different distance, and its light set out at a different time, so no two prints look alike, yet the frames, the paper and the type are the same, which is what makes them read as one piece on the wall.

What each print shows

The galaxy is found from the date, time and place you enter: the point in the sky directly overhead at that minute, and the catalogued galaxy nearest to it. Its photograph comes from a survey telescope and is finished for print. Under it go the name or dedication, the date and time, the place, the galaxy's PGC number and how many million years its light travelled to arrive that day. Every number can be checked in the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database.

Sizes and prices for four

The first print is full price; the other three are 20% off. At 16 × 20″ that saves $294. Delivery is included in every price.

A gift the whole family can share

It is a Christmas present for parents from their children, a gift from grandparents to a new generation, or the first thing hung in a new house. Because each print carries one person's moment, a fifth can be added the year a new baby arrives and it will match the other four.

Questions about the Family Collection

What is the Family Collection?

Four framed prints, one for each person in the family. Each one shows the real galaxy that was directly overhead at the moment and place that person was born (or any moment you choose for them), finished from its telescope photograph, with their name, the date, the place and the catalogue number printed beneath it.

How much does it cost?

$1,666 for four prints at 16 × 20 inches. The first print is full price and the other three are 20% off, which is the same rule every order with more than one print follows. At 11 × 14 inches the four come to $986; at 24 × 30, $2,686; at 32 × 40, $4,386. Delivery is included.

Can the four prints be different sizes?

No. A family wall works because the four frames match, so the Family Collection is one size for all four. If you want different sizes, order them one by one and add the others to the same order at checkout; the same 20% applies.

Does it have to be exactly four people?

The Family Collection is four. For two or three people, start with one moment on the home page and add the others at checkout; for five or six, add them the same way. Up to six prints fit in one order.

What if I do not know someone's exact birth time?

Use the closest time you know. Midday is a fair choice when nobody remembers. The sky overhead moves about one degree every four minutes, so a different time can mean a different galaxy, and the print shows the time you entered so it is never presented as more exact than it is.

Can two people in the family get the same galaxy?

No. Every moment is matched to a different catalogued galaxy, and once a galaxy is recorded for one person it is not given to anyone else. Twins born minutes apart get two different galaxies.

What is actually printed?

The finished telescope photograph of that person's galaxy, and under it their name or a short dedication, the date and time, the place, the galaxy's catalogue number (PGC) and how long its light travelled to reach us. Each print comes in a black wood box frame, 33 mm deep, behind acrylic glazing, with a record card.

Is this naming a galaxy after someone?

No. A galaxy cannot be renamed for anyone; catalogue names are given by astronomers. What you get is a record of which real galaxy was overhead at a real moment, with the numbers anyone can check against the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database.

Will the four prints arrive together?

They are placed as one order and made at the same time. You get one tracking email per shipment, and the estimated delivery window is shown at checkout before you pay.

What if a print arrives damaged?

Photograph it as it came and email us within fourteen days. A replacement is made and sent at our cost.
