What Galaxy Origins is
Galaxy Origins makes framed prints of a real galaxy. A customer gives a date, a time and a place: a birth, a first meeting, a wedding. We compute the exact point of sky that stood straight overhead at that moment, find the catalogued galaxy nearest to it, and print it with the coordinates, the catalogue number and the distance its light has travelled.
Every number on the print can be checked against the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database. Galaxy Origins is not affiliated with NASA or with any observatory; it uses their published data and says so.
Facts
- What is sold: a personalised framed print in four sizes, 11×14 to 32×40 inches, from $290.
- Where: made to order and shipped across the United States and the European Union.
- The data: a catalogue of 470,588 galaxies drawn from HyperLEDA and the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database.
- The honest part: nobody can buy or name a galaxy, and we do not pretend otherwise. What the customer keeps is the record of their moment and the print.
Story ideas we can help with
- The light in the picture left its galaxy millions of years before the moment it marks. We can work out what was happening on Earth when it set off.
- A gift for someone who has everything: why people want a real object, not a certificate.
- How the calculation works, and why the same moment in two cities gives two different galaxies.
- We will compute the galaxy for a date your readers know, such as a famous birth, a landing or a final, for use in your piece.
