The Whirlpool Galaxy photographed by Hubble, with its smaller companion visible

Galaxy Origins / The details

A real object. A traceable image.

The story is personal. The object behind it is real.

NASA, ESA, S. Beckwith (STScI), and the Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA)
01

The object and its source

Catalogue identifiers and coordinates describe real astronomical objects. The project's catalogue draws on HyperLEDA and the 2MASS Redshift Survey. Survey imagery may come from DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys or Pan-STARRS1; selected Collection examples use Hubble imagery. The credit for the particular image matters: not every artwork is a Hubble photograph.

02

What image finishing means

The print image is prepared with AI-assisted processing from the selected galaxy's telescope photograph. The finished artwork is not an unprocessed scientific data product. Processing can change the appearance of detail; it should not be interpreted as new telescope measurements. Check the finished proof rather than assuming it will look identical to the raw survey capture.

03

What your date means

The date, time and place are inputs to the matching calculation. They are not the date or location of the telescope exposure. The same distinction applies to the dedication: it gives the work personal meaning without changing the object's catalogue identity.

04

Photography and visualizations

Room scenes and frame-size simulations are labeled product visualizations. They help you judge presentation and approximate scale; they are not photographs of every delivered order. The frame-profile photograph shows the physical moulding. No product visualization is evidence of a customer's purchase or review.

Q

Questions

Where do the photographs come from?

From astronomical surveys, the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys and Pan-STARRS1, and for selected Collection galaxies, the Hubble Space Telescope. The source is credited for each image.

Is the image AI-generated?

No galaxy is invented. Each artwork starts from a telescope photograph of the selected galaxy; AI-assisted processing prepares it for print. The finished image is not unprocessed scientific data, and generated detail is not a new telescope measurement.

Can I check that the galaxy is real?

Yes. The catalogue number and coordinates printed on the artwork can be looked up in the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) or HyperLEDA.

Is every artwork a Hubble photograph?

No. Most come from survey telescopes; Hubble images are used for selected Collection galaxies. The credit on each image names its source.
