Star map or real galaxy? What each one shows.

Both start from a date and a place. One draws the night sky as dots; the other is a photograph of a single real galaxy.

Custom star maps became popular because the idea is beautiful: the sky as it was on the night that mattered. They plot the bright stars and constellation lines visible from a city at a chosen date and hour.

What a star map is

A computed chart. It is accurate for the bright stars, it is drawn as dots, and it is the same chart for anyone standing in the same city that evening. Many shops sell it for the price of a dinner.

What a galaxy print is

A Galaxy Origins print takes the same date, time and place and computes one point: the zenith, directly overhead. It matches the real, catalogued galaxy nearest to that point that has not been assigned to anyone else, and the artwork is a telescope photograph of that galaxy, from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys or Pan-STARRS1, finished for print. Its catalogue number and coordinates are printed on it and can be checked.

Which to choose

A star map is a lovely, affordable keepsake. A galaxy print is a framed artwork meant to be the centrepiece of a room, and a gift nobody else can give. See it for the night you met.

Questions

Is a star map accurate?

Yes for the bright stars visible from that place and time; it is a computed chart, not a photograph.

Is the galaxy print a real photograph?

Yes. It is made from a telescope survey photograph of that galaxy, finished for print, with its shape unchanged.
